ServerShelf vs Termius, XPipe, Royal TSX & Simon
Four tools people use to run their servers from a Mac, Windows or Linux desktop, next to ServerShelf. Where another one fits better, we say so.
ServerShelf is for people who want one local app for their whole fleet: inventory, SSH, updates, containers, certificates, uptime and log triage.
No account, no cloud, no subscription. Your server list and credentials stay in an encrypted database on your own machine.

All four are solid tools. Each covers a different part of the job:
- Choose Termius if you want a polished SSH client on every device, with team vaults and cloud sync as a subscription.
- Choose XPipe if you want a free, open-source connection hub that launches your own terminal and browses remote files.
- Choose Royal TSX if you manage RDP, VNC and web consoles from a Mac and want a connection manager bought once.
- Choose Simon if you want a classic Mac monitoring app with many check types and scriptable notifiers.
- Choose ServerShelf if you want inventory, SSH, patching, Docker, TLS, uptime and AI log triage in one private app, bought once, on macOS, Windows and Linux.
How do these five tools differ?
Termius and Royal TSX are connection managers: they store hosts and credentials and open sessions. XPipe does the same in an open-source hub and adds a remote file browser plus container and hypervisor detection. Simon is a monitor: it checks websites, mail servers, DNS and drives and notifies you, but it does not open SSH sessions or keep an inventory. ServerShelf combines the two halves. It imports servers from twelve cloud providers, scans them over plain SSH, tracks pending updates, certificates and uptime, controls Docker, and hands log excerpts to the AI provider of your choice. Of the five it is the only one that runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and is sold as a one-time purchase.

When each tool is the better pick
Termius is the best fit if you live in the terminal on five devices and want the same hosts, keys and snippets on all of them. The free tier works offline with a local vault; sync, snippets and team vaults are a subscription.
XPipe is the open-source hub. It stores connections, launches the terminal you already use, browses remote files and finds containers and virtual machines on a host by itself. Paid tiers add hypervisor and enterprise features; monitoring is not part of it.
Royal TSX is the Mac connection manager for mixed estates: RDP, VNC, SSH, web consoles and TeamViewer in one document, with credentials from 1Password or KeePass. Bought once, no monitoring.
Simon is a Mac monitor with a long list of check types and filters, scriptable in AppleScript or shell. It watches things and tells you; it does not manage servers.
ServerShelf is the pick when you want the inventory and the actions in one place: import from your cloud provider, scan over SSH, see pending updates and expiring certificates, restart a container, run a snippet, and ask your own AI key what a log excerpt means. One purchase, and the data stays on your machine.
Monitoring: ServerShelf next to Uptime Kuma, Simon and ServerCat
ServerShelf includes uptime checks, certificate tracking and hardware telemetry. It is a desktop app, though: nothing runs while it is closed. Here is how that side compares with the tools people run for monitoring alone.
| Feature | ServerShelf | Uptime Kuma | Simon | ServerCat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runs as | Desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux) | Self-hosted server, Docker or Node.js | Mac app | iOS / iPadOS / macOS app |

| Pending updates & patching | ✓ | — | — | — |
| TLS certificate expiry | ✓ | ✓ | ~ via web check | — |
| Notification channels | Native, email, ntfy, Slack, Discord, Pushover, webhook, sound, speech, heartbeat | 90+ services | Email, iMessage, sound, speech, web, scripts | Not listed |

| Inventory, SSH terminal, AI triage | ✓ | — | — | ~ SSH terminal, paid |
| Mobile app | ✓ iOS & Android companion with push | ~ browser | — | ✓ iOS is the main app |
| Open source | — | ✓ MIT | — | — |
| Pricing | €39 once | Free | $99 once or Setapp | Free monitoring; $5.99/year or $18.99 once for terminal and Docker |
Comparison as of September 2026, best-effort from each product's public pages and documentation; features may differ by version and plan.
- Choose Uptime Kuma if you want a free monitor that runs around the clock on a server you own, with status pages and the widest choice of notification services.
- Choose Simon if you want to watch websites, mail servers and DNS from a Mac and script the reactions yourself.
- Choose ServerCat if you want a quick metrics dashboard for Linux boxes on your iPhone.
- Choose ServerShelf if the monitoring should sit next to the inventory, the terminal and the patch runs. Many people run it alongside Uptime Kuma: Kuma watches the public URLs 24/7, ServerShelf manages the machines behind them.
